How Franklinton began
Franklinton began in 1839 as Franklin Depot, a stop on the railroad, and took the name Franklinton when the town was incorporated on December 20, 1842 (like Franklin County, the town is named for Benjamin Franklin). An 1884 spur line carried trains about ten miles east to Louisburg, and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad took over both lines in 1900.
In 1895 Samuel C. Vann opened the Sterling Cotton Mill, which ran under several owners until 1991 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The town has its share of close calls, too: on April 4, 1963, a wildfire burned roughly 9,500 acres and threatened all of Franklinton.
